Hamlet Act 1 Scene 4/5 Questions
Scene 4
2. Why does Hamlet want to put on an "antic disposition"?
While considering how Claudius puts on a show of happiness and good, he's inherently still a villain, Hamlet realizes that he could use that too; he could pretend to be mad and out of sort and use it against Claudius to avenge his father.
3. Why is Act 1 Scene 5 the inciting event of the play?
This scene is when Hamlet discovers that his father has been murdered, and his angst and sadness at his mother and uncle become justified. He makes a decision to use Claudius's fake good persona for himself, and the scene ends at a point where the play will take off, off of Hamlet's revenge plan.
Summary the entire of Act 1.
Three guards outside of Elsinore castle discover a ghost that they assume to be the dead king of Denmark, Hamlet, and talk about how the dead king may be haunting them because he caused war between Denmark and Norway. In the next scene, the new King Claudius, brother of dead Hamlet, marries Gertrude, the widowed Queen immediately after King Hamlet's funeral. Young prince Hamlet is introduced, who appears to be depressed and angsty about his father's death not being respected by anyone in his family. He goes into a soliloquy about the unfairness of his mother's attitude towards his father, and soon after, the three guards come in and tell Hamlet about the ghost that they assumed to be his father. Meanwhile, Ophelia, the daughter of Polonius is being admonished by her brother Laertes about her encounters with Hamlet. Laertes takes his leave after their father arrives, and leaves for Paris, and Polonius gives Ophelia a broad warning about Hamlet; chiding her for spending so much time with her and advising to avoid him from then on, lest she ruins Polonius's reputation by getting pregnant. Later in the night, Hamlet goes outside to see his father's ghost accompanied by the guards, and he speaks to him. The ghost tells him that his father has actually been poisoned to death by Claudius and that he only appears in night time because he is going through purgatory for his sins in the day time. Hamlet has a moment of epiphany when he sees that Claudius wears a mask of good when he is actually evil, and it is foreshadowed that Hamlet will use that knowledge to his advantage.
